This project started when I was photographing my sister in a studio just for fun and we were laughing a lot. I managed to snap this picture of her just as she was finding something particularly hilarious.

A while later I was trying to think of an ‘interesting’ portrait to sketch and I came across this. I loved sketching it and was so happy with how it came out. When I asked someone for feedback, what they said made me realise why I loved it so much…

‘It’s a great sketch but it’s not a particularly flattering picture of her is it?’

Actually, I find this is a lovely picture of my sister. In fact, it’s my favourite picture of her. This is an image of her captured in a moment of pure, unselfconscious happiness which, to me, is a beautiful portrait.
